Creamy Classic Vanilla Custard

Here’s a classic vanilla custard recipe that’s creamy and delicious:

Classic Vanilla Custard

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 4 large egg yolks
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter

Instructions:

  1. Heat the Milk:
  • In a medium saucepan, heat the milk over medium heat until it starts to simmer. Do not let it boil.
  1. Mix Dry Ingredients:
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the sugar, cornstarch, and salt.
  1. Combine with Egg Yolks:
  • Add the egg yolks to the dry ingredients and whisk until the mixture is smooth and pale in color.
  1. Temper the Egg Mixture:
  • Slowly pour about 1/2 cup of the hot milk into the egg mixture, whisking constantly to temper the eggs and prevent them from scrambling.
  1. Cook the Custard:
  • Pour the tempered egg mixture back into the saucepan with the remaining milk. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens and comes to a gentle boil, about 5-7 minutes.
  1. Add Flavorings:
  • Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract and butter until fully incorporated.
  1. Strain and Cool:
  • Pour the custard through a fine-mesh sieve into a clean bowl to remove any lumps. Cover the surface of the custard with plastic wrap to prevent a skin from forming and let it cool to room temperature. Then, refrigerate for at least 2 hours until chilled.
  1. Serve:
  • Serve the vanilla custard on its own or with fresh fruit, berries, or a drizzle of caramel sauce.

Enjoy your creamy and delicious vanilla custard!
