  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoon sugar (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)
  • Grated Parmesan cheese for serving

  • Fill a large pot with water, add a generous pinch of salt, and bring it to a boil.
  • Add the pasta and cook according to the package instructions until al dente.
  • Drain the pasta and set aside.
  1. Make the Marinara Sauce:
  • In a large skillet or saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat.
  • Add the chopped onion and cook until soft and translucent, about 5 minutes.
  • Add the minced garlic and cook for another 1-2 minutes, until fragrant.
  • Pour in the crushed tomatoes and stir to combine.
  • Season the sauce with sugar (if using), salt, black pepper, dried oregano, dried basil, and red pepper flakes.
  • Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, to allow the flavors to meld.
  1. Combine and Serve:
  • Add the cooked pasta to the skillet with the marinara sauce and toss to coat the pasta evenly with the sauce.
  • Serve the pasta hot, garnished with fresh basil leaves and grated Parmesan cheese, if desired.

Tips:

  • You can add other ingredients like sautéed mushrooms, bell peppers, or olives to the sauce for extra flavor.
  • For a heartier meal, add cooked meatballs, grilled chicken, or shrimp to the pasta.
